Stereospecific formation of vanadium mandelato complexes with [Fe(2,2′-bipyridine)3]2+ as a counter ion

Abstract Two vanadium complexes of mandelic acid having [Fe( bpy ) 3 ] 2+ as counterion, ][V 2 O 4 ( rac - mand ]·4.9H O·0.1CH CN 1 , FeV L and (H O)[Fe( [V 7 S ·28H = 2,2’-bipyridine, 2– mandelato ligand, C 8 H 6 have been synthesized characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction spectral methods. The FeSO — —KVO —H O—CH system exhibits a stereospecific behaviour: while from the including racemic only complex V type could be obtained in crystalline form, with -mandelic afforded product. All atoms exhibit tetragonal pyramidal coordination geometry oxygen donor oxido ligands carboxylate anion. behaviour was investigated using 51 NMR spectroscopy, which revealed different composition systems after some preliminary period (≈ 15 days). compound is chiral non-racemic (space group P 2), structure contains Δ-[Fe( cations 3– anions.
